I speak both Spanish and English but my husband only speaks and understands English so that is what made us decide to use OPOL. The only other people who speak Spanish are my parents, so my son is able to hear it from them too. My hope is to meet other parents in my situation so that we may be able to start a playgroup where only Spanish is spoken.

We are both Americans who just returned from living in Madrid, Spain and we are interested in raising our future daughter bilingually. We definitely are interested in meeting other Spanish speaking children for her to play with.

I speak Spanish and English fluently. My husband only speaks English but understands Spanish fairly well. Since Kaitlin was born we have used the OPOL approach. It came pretty naturally and we have not ever made a big deal of it or forced her to speak one or the other. She is just used to always speaking Spanish to me and English to her dad. She can communicate quite well in both, but her Spanish language abilities are quite a bit more advanced than her English. I believe this is due to the fact that she spends a little bit more time with me, we attend a Spanish language church and my family lives close by and they also only speak to her in Spanish. However, when we go to visit my husband's family her English immediately improves quite a bit. The OPOL method has worked great for us so far and hopefully she will have a pretty solid Spanish base by the time she starts attending school and gets more exposed to the English language.

At home we mostly speak spanish since i know spanish. I tried to talk to my children in french but it is hard since my dh doesn't speak it. I think my oldest son understands it but does not speak it eventhough he knows a lot of words.

Would like to gain more knowedge on how to raise a bilingual child from birth. I learned English in school at the age of 5. My husband only has high school and college Spanish. North Florida resources are limited.
